Evidence for slow (2-10 Hz) and gamma frequency coherence between spike trains and local field potentials in the cerebellum

چکیده
7 A method for detecting relationships between single-unit spike trains and local %eld potentials (LFPs) was developed and applied to recordings from rat cerebellum. LFPs were repeatedly 9 %ltered with a shifting frequency window. The resulting traces were transformed into peak-time point processes for comparison with spike trains using “relative-phase” analysis (Biol. Cyber11 net., in press). Discharge of some Purkinje cells was phase-related to LFP oscillations in the 2–10 Hz and 30–50 Hz frequency ranges. This analysis method revealed hidden coherency be13 tween spike-trains and LFPs. The %ndings suggest that cerebellar activity is, to some extent, temporally organized according to both slow and fast rhythms. 15 c © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Inferring spike trains from local field potentials.
We investigated whether it is possible to infer spike trains solely on the basis of the underlying local field potentials (LFPs). Using support vector machines and linear regression models, we found that in the primary visual cortex (V1) of monkeys, spikes can indeed be inferred from LFPs, at least with moderate success. Although there is a considerable degree of variation across electrodes, th...

Inhibitory interneurons play a critical role in the generation of gamma (20-50 Hz) oscillations, either by forming mutually inhibitory networks or as part of recurrent networks with pyramidal cells. A key property of fast spiking interneurons is their ability to generate brief spikes and high-frequency spike trains with little accommodation. However, the role of their firing properties in netwo...
متن کاملCortico-cerebellar coherence during a precision grip task in the monkey.
We studied the synchronization of single units in macaque deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN) with local field potentials (LFPs) in primary motor cortex (M1) bilaterally during performance of a precision grip task. Analysis was restricted to periods of steady holding, during which M1 oscillations are known to be strongest. Significant coherence between DCN units and M1 LFP oscillations bilaterally was...
متن کاملTemporal dynamics of attention-modulated neuronal synchronization in macaque V4
It was recently observed that neurons in area V4 exhibited enhanced gamma band (35–90 Hz) synchronization when monkeys attended to a visual stimulus as compared to when they were not attending to the same stimulus (Science 291 (2001) 1560). Spike-triggered averaging of local 8eld potentials (LFPs) was used to show attentional modulation in an early period from 50 to 150 ms after stimulus onset ...
متن کاملCoherence between motor cortical activity and peripheral discontinuities during slow finger movements.
Slow finger movements in man are not smooth, but are characterized by 8- to 12-Hz discontinuities in finger acceleration thought to have a central source. We trained two macaque monkeys to track a moving target by performing index finger flexion/extension movements and recorded local field potentials (LFPs) and spike activity from the primary motor cortex (M1); some cells were identified as pyr...
